BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

Beasts of the Southern Wild is one of this years Oscar contenders.  The cast is made up of all first-time actors. It follows a young girl who, faced with her father’s fading health and environmental changes that release an army of prehistoric creatures, leaves her Delta home in search of her mother.

First time Director Benh Zeitlin shot this film in New Orleans right after the BP gulf oil spill.

Eight year old Quvenzhané Wallis could very well get a nomination for Best Actress. She would tie with Justin Henry for the youngest Oscar nominee ever in Kramer vs. Kramer in 1979. He was nominated for best supporting actor. The youngest winner is still Tatum O’Neal, who won best supporting actress at 10 for Paper Moon in 1973.

It was released this weekend in New York and Los Angeles grossing $169,000 or $42,250 per-screen making it the number one independent film of the week.

We will definitely be hearing more as we approach awards season.
