In order to be considered for this years Oscar race, your film has to be:
-for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County,
-for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days,
-advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in print media, and
within the Awards year deadlines specified in Rule Three.
Meaning it doesn’t matter when it is officially released or even goes straight to DVD, it must run in a commercial theater for 7 days. Rumor has it that ZERO DARK THIRTY will get a limited run in NY/LA in December and released wide January 11th. The reason to do this of course is money. ZERO DARK THIRTY will still compete for awards, but it wont have to compete at the box office with LES MISERABLES, DJANGO UNCHAINED and THE HOBBIT. Plus, December is when families get together to go the theater and they are not necessarily looking for a movie about killing Osama Bin Laden.
We also know that Sony Pictures has confirmed that Jessica Chastain will be campaigned for Best Actress for ZERO DARK THIRTY, not supporting as previously thought. This could hurt Jennifer Lawrence’s chances for SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.
