The first half of the year has not brought much in the way of BP contenders. The closest we now is BEFORE MIDNIGHT with Julie Delpy as a Best Actress contender and maybe a Best Original Screenplay. THE GREAT GATSBY has fizzled out to so so reviews. It could get some technical nominations, but it is not likely to get a BP nom. MUD was a possibility, but some good reviews don’t seem to be giving it any momentum. I think everyone is waiting for Matthew McConaughey in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. Where he has a shot for Best Actor. THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES also failed to gain an audience.
The films with the most potential sight unseen are:
AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
GRACE OF MONACO
MANDELA: THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM
Most of these movies will come and go. Other dark horses will come out of nowhere and will push other aside. But it’s never to early to start the Oscar conversation.
