A review of movie awards news from last week:

*The AMPAS revised their voting rules for Best Animated feature.

*The HBO documentary CASTING BY will be getting a theatrical release in NY and LA to qualify for an Oscar run.  I highly recommend checking it out.

*THE BUTLER has made over $110 million in the US so far. Big box office numbers solidify a Best Picture nomination.

*Iran’s LE’ PASSE (THE PAST)  will be submitted for Best Foreign Language Film. If you liked Director Asghar Farhadi last film A SEPARATION, you will want to see this one.

*GRAVITY opens this Friday.  It is in the running for a Best Picture nomination and is sure to win all of the tech awards including cinematography and best visual effects.

*This weeks Box Office results. Movies with some Oscar buzz are highlighted.

1. “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” $35 million.

2. “Prisoners,” $11.3 million

3. “Rush,” $10.3 million

4. “Baggage Claim,” $9.3 million.

5. “Don Jon,” $9 million

6. “Insidious: Chapter 2,” $6.7 million

7. “The Family,” $3.7 million

8. “Instructions Not Included,” $3.4 million

9. “We’re the Millers,” $2.9 million

10. “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” $2.4 million ($1.9 million international).

I saw Sophia Coppola’s THE BLING RING this week and it sucked.
