71st GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS

Early this morning the nominations were announced for the 71st Golden Globes. Voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press, they are known for not wanting to separate themselves from the Oscars. Unfortunately for them, they have a huge influence. Academy members are looking at this list of nominees and deciding what they should pick to watch from their pile of screeners.

Some surprises:
-No nominations for THE BUTLER, specifically Oprah Winfrey.
-RUSH nominated for Best Picture, Drama. RUSH is a European story which could explain the foreign press votes.
-Kate Winslet for LABOR DAY was unexpected.
-Sally Hawkins nomination for BLUE JASMINE is a pleasant surprise.
-Those hoping for a James Franco nomination for SPRING BREAKERS are disappointed.
-Only one nomination for BEFORE MIDNIGHT (Actress Julie Delpy). Many were expecting a Best Picture or Screenplay nomination.
-PHILOMENA maintaining momentum with 3 nominations.
-Idris Elba nominated for MANDELA:LONG WALK TO FREEDOM after poor reviews of the movie.
-No Meryl Streep nomination for AUGUST:OSAGE COUNTY
-Only one nomination for SAVING MR. BANKS (Emma Thompson).
-No director nomination for Martin Scorsese for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.
-After mixed reviews HER nominated for Best Picture, Comedy.
-Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto nominated for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, but no Best Picture nomination.
-FRUITVALE STATION completely shut out.

The Golden Globes Ceremony will be January 12th on NBC.
