The Screen Actors Guild consists of 165,000 members. Around 2100 are selected each year to vote in the annual SAG Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences acting branch is the largest of all Oscar branches at 1,311 members. This makes the SAG awards one of the best precursors as to who will win acting categories at the Oscars. In their 19 years they have predicted 52 of the last 76 Oscar winners for acting. In the last 2 years 3 out of 4 actors when on to with the Oscar after a SAG win.
Best Picture has only matched the SAG’s Best Ensemble award 9 times, but 7 of those were in the last 11 years. This looks to be closer step to Best Picture for AMERICAN HUSTLE, in my opinion, the most overrated movie of the year. How it beats out 12 YEARS A SLAVE or GRAVITY is beyond comprehension. One thing is for sure, Hollywood loves AMERICAN HUSTLE and that’s all it takes to win the Oscar. I still hold out hope for 12 YEARS. The other acting categories are as close to a lock to win the Oscar as you can get.
