A Record 27 Animated Films Compete for an Oscar

It was already announced that a record 145 documentaries are competing for an Oscar this year. We now know the record 27 animated films competing this year. The Best Animated Feature category is unique in that at least 16 films have to qualify to get up to 5 nominations. If we take a look at the top 22 money makers of the year, 6 of them are animated features. Finding Dory is the highest grossing movie of the year so far and likely to stay that way. Box office gross only plays a small part in winning an Oscar, but Finding Dory’s $486 million is hard to ignore.
