There were 145 documentaries eligible for an Oscar nomination. The list has now been narrowed down to 15. Some notable omissions include Audrie & Dasiy, Amanda Knox and Beatles: Eight Days a Week. It’s interesting to note that the first 2 were distributed by Netflix and the latter by Hulu. The Academy is having difficulty embracing streaming services for obvious reasons, but they need to embrace new technologies if they want to stay relevant.
The list will be narrowed down to 5 and announced with the rest of the Oscar nominations on January 24th.
Correction: The Ivory Game is a Netflix film and did make the cut.
