Remembering Carrie Fisher

This would not be a movie website if I didn’t mention the untimely death of Carrie Fisher today. We all know about Star Wars, but she was also one of the greatest writers of our time. She became known as the “script doctor” for her work on “punching up” scripts and consulting. This work often goes uncredited, but can end up making or breaking a movie.

Fisher would diagnose problems and suggest solutions. She might have added in a few new jokes or implement massive structural changes or reworking entire characters and scenes.

She was responsible for fixing up Hook in 1991, Sister Act in 1992, Lethal Weapon 3 in 1992 and The Wedding Singer in 1998. Entertainment Weekly called Carrie Fisher one of the most sought after doctors in town. She was never credited by name for any of her script doctoring.
