A couple of surprises at Sunday nights SAG Awards that could change who we have been predicting in the Oscar race. Many of 130,000 SAG members vote in the Oscars. The actors branch is the largest of the 17 branches. A SAG win for an actor leads to an Oscar win more often than it doesn’t.
That is good news for Denzel Washington. Up until tonight, Casey Affleck has been the Best Actor frontrunner for Manchester by the Sea. The SAG win for Washington automatically shoots him to the top of the list.
The other big shocker of the night was Best Ensemble going to Hidden Figures. Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea appeared to be safe bets. Oscar Best Picture frontrunner, La La Land was not nominated for a SAG Ensemble which makes the Hidden Figures win a mute point. It does hurt Moonlight and Manchesters chances of winning over La La Land. Hidden Figures is now in 2nd place to win. In reality the SAG Ensemble winner has only won the Oscar 11 times in the past 21 years.
Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali winning in their categories solidifies their Oscar wins.
