The Preferential Ballot Explained

The Oscars use the preferential ballot to come up with the Best Picture winner. All of the other categories are decided on a plurality vote (whoever gets the most votes wins). 

This video from Vox explains how the preferential voting works and why the films with broadest support (La La Land) win over films with the most passionate support (Moonlight). It is very difficult for a divisive movie to win in a preferential system.
