Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread was shot under a veil of secrecy. It is reported to be the last film ever with Daniel Day-Lewis. He announced his retirement earlier this year. We now have a better look into what the film is about.
Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Woodcock, a dressmaker in London in the 1950s. One day he falls for a young woman named Alma (Vicky Krieps). As Reynolds’ sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) is disgusted, Alma becomes his lover and muse, eventually driving him to restrained, British torment as she flirts her way into high society and even starts having her own ideas about what sort of clothes she’d like to wear.
Apparently Day-Lewis fell in love with the art of dressmaking during filming that he plans to do some of his own during retirement.
