The Oscar is still very unclear at this point. Very unusual for this time of year. The Spirit Awards nominations gave a few clues to how things may go, but there are still many unanswered questions.
Some of the biggest precursor awards of the year are right around the corner. SAG voting opened on November 16th. The Hollywood Foreign Press Has received their ballots and are now voting for the Golden Globes.
A few things will start to take shape this week. On Monday, November 27th, the Gotham Awards will take place. The Gotham’s are an indie group so they will only help to solidify a few films that are on the fringe such as, Get Out. On Tuesday November 28th the National Board of Review reveal their winners of 2017. On Wednesday the Directors Guild of America’s voting opens for their 16,000 members. Also this week the New York Film Critics Circle reveal their winners on Thursday, November 30th. The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the PGA receive their ballots on Friday, December 1st.
Last year at this time La La Land was the frontrunner, but then Moonlight began to gain some traction and won NBR, NYFCC and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. By the end of this week, we will have a better idea of how the Oscar race MIGHT go. In the end, anything can happen.
