The Shape of Water Leads BAFTA Nominations

The British Academy Film Awards announced their nominations on Tuesday. BAFTA nominations have been a good precursor to how Oscar nominations might go. Can’t say the same for the winners.

Unlike the Oscars, BAFTA has 5 nominees for Best Picture. It’s a good way to see which films have the strongest support. Most likely your Best Picture winner is in the BAFTA Best Film list of nominees Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The last time Best Picture was not on the BAFTA list was 2004 with Million Dollar Baby. The winners haven’t matched since 12 Years a Slave won both the BAFTA and Best Picture at the Oscars in 2013.

The Shape of Water leads with 12 nominations. Darkest Hour and Three Billboards follow with 9 nominations.

The winners will be announced on February 18th.
